How it works

Binding goes all the way round the quilt, plus about 12 inches for the mitred corners and joining the ends. Strips are cut across the width of fabric and joined end to end with diagonal seams, which take a little of each strip.

The fabric is the number of strips times the strip width, plus 4 inches to straighten the cut edge, rounded up to 1/8 yard.

FAQ

2 1/4 or 2 1/2 inch binding?

2 1/2 inch strips are the most common and easiest to handle; 2 1/4 inch gives a slimmer, tighter binding. Both are folded in half before sewing.

How much binding for a queen quilt?

An 84" x 102" quilt needs about 384 inches of binding: 10 strips of 2 1/2 inch, a little over 3/4 yard.
