Layer cake quilt pattern FAQ
How many layer cakes for a throw quilt?
One or two, depending on the block: see the table below.
What do I get when I buy a pattern?
A PDF made for your exact quilt: fabric requirements for every fabric (in yards and meters), a cutting plan strip by strip with diagrams, strip sets where the block uses them, block assembly with a diagram for every step, the full layout with every block placed and labeled, borders, backing (regular or wide), batting, binding, and a coloring page to try other colors.
What is free?
Everything on the page before you pay: the live preview on your bed, sofa or wall, the finished size and the number of blocks. The fabric amounts, the cutting plans, the diagrams and the layout are in the PDF; our free calculators work out quilt size, backing and binding. For a limited time the starter pattern, the quilt the configurator opens with, downloads free in full, so you can see exactly what a pattern is like. Change anything and the pattern is a custom one at the normal price.
How do you work out the size?
For a bed we add the drop (how far the quilt hangs over the sides and the foot) and an optional pillow tuck to the mattress size, then choose how many whole blocks get closest to it. Quilts are made of whole blocks, so the finished size can be an inch or two off the target; the page tells you when it is more than 3 inches off.
Can I use a charm pack, layer cake or jelly roll?
Yes. Pick the precut under Your fabric and the block size is set to what the precut makes, for example 4 1/2 inch squares from charm packs or 2 inch rails from jelly rolls. The pattern tells you how many packs to buy and how much background and border fabric to add.
